COVID-19 VACCINATION AND INFODEMIC: CHALLENGES FOR NURSING IN PROMOTING HEALTH LITERACY

This study analyzes how health literacy influences attitudes of acceptance and hesitancy toward COVID-19 vaccination in adult populations, in a context marked by infodemic and the spread of misinformation. Through a narrative review and thematic analysis of nine international studies, the results show that sufficient or high levels of health literacy are consistent predictors of greater vaccine acceptance. Conversely, exposure to false information, conspiracy theories, and unreliable sources emerge as negative predictors of vaccine confidence and adherence to vaccination campaigns. The results of the studies analyzed also showed that sociodemographic factors, trust in health institutions and governments, as well as the type of information sources consulted, modulate the combined impact of health literacy and the infodemic on vaccination decisions. This supports the urgent need for public policies that promote critical health literacy, integrating multisectoral strategies in school, community, and clinical contexts. It reinforces the fundamental role of nursing in health education, acting to simplify communication and empower citizens to make informed and conscious decisions.
