Abstract

This study investigates the role of leadership in smart cities, emphasizing the need for leaders capable of applying innovative and technological practices, as well as the skills and competencies that will drive economic development and enhance the effectiveness of management strategies in companies operating within cities characterized as smart. Furthermore, it highlights the approaches proposed by different authors, underscoring the relevance of leadership. It also presents the indicators and metrics used to classify a city as smart, particularly the CIMI Index developed by IESE Business School, with special emphasis on the “Human Capital” indicator and the importance of developing leaders prepared for this context. The expected results of this study include a deeper understanding of the competencies required for effective leadership in innovative urban environments, as well as an analysis of practices for integrating technical knowledge and managerial skills to address the complexities of smart cities. Additionally, this work is expected to encourage more specific studies on leadership development in smart cities, both in academic and business contexts, opening new perspectives for research and development in this field.
