Abstract

Higher education internationalization is directly linked to language policy issues, as it brings together individuals from different countries, cultures, contexts, and perspectives. The dissemination of scientific knowledge is primarily consolidated through researchers' participation in events and publication in internationally recognized journals. Although recent global changes brought by technological advances have transformed the post-pandemic world, the academic body of higher education institutions still faces linguistic difficulties in communicating with peers from different nationalities and presenting their research at scientific events. In view of this, this article aims to examine the linguistic obstacles that hinder the internationalization of a public HEI in the Southern region of Brazil. The research adopts a descriptive and exploratory qualitative approach, using an open-ended questionnaire and six semi-structured interviews as investigation instruments. The results revealed that, regarding language actions, the most significant obstacles are the language barrier and the lack of programs aimed at meeting academic production demands. This indicates a need for implementing actions focused on academic literacies to promote scientific production and dissemination. These findings contribute to discussions on the institutional role as a provider of language policies geared toward developing the necessary conditions for academic-scientific communication.
