Abstract

This article proposes a critical analysis of the Learning: The Treasure Within Report (or Jacques Delors Report), a document prepared by the International Commission on Education for the Twenty-first Century and a consequence of the World Conference on Education for All (Jomtien, 1990). The Report presents four pillars—learning to know, learning to do, learning to be, and learning to live together—which have spread as a fad in the didactic-pedagogical common sense, guided educational policies, and permeated teacher training courses. This research argues that the competence package, linked to new skills and technologies, constitutes an ideological instrument aimed at adapting education to the process of productive restructuring, ultimately serving the maintenance of capitalism. The study details and critiques each of the pillars, highlighting their adaptive essence and rampant subservience to the market.
